We offer three internships per year for the fall (September-December), spring (January-April), and summer (May-August). On occasion we offer additional internships as needed for different service offerings. Our Fall intern is Christopher Kell who is learning about the Sustainability Consulting side of the business. We already have a Spring intern lined up as well for the Energy Services side of Viridian. However, we are also currently looking for a Marketing/LEED Intern.

Our focus for this internship is on finding someone with marketing expertise first, and LEED experience/understanding second. This is a paid position. Being a small company, we use paid interns to fill gaps in our expertise sometimes while we determine the skills needed for our next job position.

We have needs for a variety of marketing tasks that are spread out over the company now, but need to be coalesced into a more international marketing plan. These tasks include: website (wordpress), newsletter (constant contact), facebook, twitter, press releases, print promotional materials, corporate gifts, non-traditional event involvement, project specific marketing, service marketing, and consistent branding. We also need help with document and presentation standardization branding, and organization.

Basic details about this internship are available on our website under Employment or by clicking here.

Further questions can be addressed to info@ViridianUSA.com.

“In the LEED” is called this month profile article in the Inviting Arkansas magazine. UALR’s Andrijana Vukovich and Viridian’s April Ambrose tell us about the new Center for Integrative Bio-Nanotechnology Services on the expanding campus.

Many believe that constructing an eco-friendly building is a risky, and sometimes expensive, venture. But according to April Ambrose, a senior project manager for Viridian, a sustainability and energy services consulting firm, this idea of gambling green for green is a common misconception. “Studies have shown that the costs of green buildings are not substantially higher than regular development projects,” Aprils says. “Higher construction cost can generally be avoided by the inclusion of green design from the beginning of the project.”

This as advice that the University of Arkansas at Little Rock has taken to heart. Andrijana Vukovich, director of planning and capital construction, says that the campus is hoping for each of its buildings to receive LEED certification, including the now under construction Nanotechnology building, among others. “Going green is important to UALR because we want to reduce waste, create less pollution and use less energy in order to have a better environment,” Andrijana says.

UALR recently received LEED Gold Certification for their Engineering and Information Technology Building. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally recognized green building certification system. “The LEED rating system provides the building industry with consistent, credible standards for what constitutes a green building and has become the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings,” April explains. For the Nanotechnology building, UALR teamed up with Viridian to build a state-of-the-art facility with an expected completion in November 2011 and LEED certification completion next spring.

April believes that the benefits to green building are more than just environmental. “Benefits to LEED certification include adding competitive advantage by reducing operation costs, improving social image by taking responsibility for their effect on their local and global community and by creating a healthier and more productive place for employees to work. Businesses that don’t do these things will be left behind by those that are.”

For business owners who are new to green building, April recommends hiring a consultant that can create an integrated design team and help contact third-party providers of green products. To make green updates to existing buildings, she says to conduct an energy audit or consult with a sustainability consultant to review existing bills and patterns. “Remember, you can’t manage what you don’t measure,” Aprils says.
Meanwhile, UALR will continue to push forward with their green building initiatives as well as other green projects on campus, including a recycling program that has increased by 50% in the last two years. “We are the education leader in our community and the state capital of Arkansas,” Andrijana says. “We strive to set an example for our community, our educational colleagues and our future leaders.”

Bryant School District held their topping out ceremony for the new Bryant High School facility on Monday, July 18th. In building construction, topping out is a ceremony held when the last beam is placed at the top of a building. Student and city media, students, staff, and members of the design and construction team were present. The ceremony included remarks by Superintendent Randy Rutherford and James Cone of James H. Cone Construction. Then the last beam, which many of the attendees had signed, was lifted into place flying the United States and Bryant Schools flags.

This project is a 120,000 square foot, $27 million facility addition to Bryant High School and is pursuing LEED for Schools Silver certification. The building will hold nearly 1400 studenets and around 70 staff. James H. Cone, Inc. is the construction manager for the project, and Jackson Brown King is the architect. Viridian is providing LEEDconsulting, Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning, daylight measurement, Indoor Air Quality testing, Building Testing, and Energy Modelling services.

As past Chair and member of the USGBC Arkansas Advocacy Committee, April Ambrose attended the third annual USGBC Congressional Advocacy Day in September 2010 in Washington D.C. This was her second attendance to this event which provided an opportunity to interact with members of Congress and their staff to promote sound green building policy at the federal level. While there, April met with nearly all of the Arkansas congressional delegation regarding green building policy. April invited each of the legislators to tour one of the many LEED certified facilities and schools when in Arkansas. Only Senator Mark Pryor took advantage of this opportunity.

In March of 2011, Hurricane Creek Elementary School in Bryant, Arkansas was proud to welcome U.S. Senator Mark Pryor as he toured the building for a firsthand look at the state of the art energy management systems that earned Hurricane Creek Elementary School its LEED certification.

Senator Pryor’s Communications Director Michael Teague, and Field Representative Deke Whitbeck accompanied him for the visit. Also in attendance were: Linda Smith, Executive Director of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Arkansas Chapter, Viridian’s own Senior Project Manager April Ambrose, Terracon Biologist Jodi Taylor, and Trane representatives Cortney Herbst and Glen Irvin. Bryant School District’s own Bob Padgett, District Maintenance Supervisor,Tammie Reitenger, HCE Principal, and Julie Boyd, HCE teacher and District Teacher of the Year, hosted the tour. The event was organized by JD Lowery, the Chair of the USGBC AR Advocacy Committee.

Senator Pryor was very impressed with the many technologies and aspects of the facility that helped it to become LEED certified. He is now a state and national advocate for Green Schools due to the inherent benefits including improved indoor air quality, reduced long-term utility and maintenance costs, increased daylight and so many more. In addition the tour received national media through the USGBC.
